What Is a 240V Appliance Circuit?

Most outlets in your home run on standard 120V circuits, enough for lamps, phone chargers, and small appliances. Larger appliances like electric stoves, clothes dryers, welders, saunas, and hot water tanks need 240V - double the voltage - to run efficiently.

A 240V circuit uses a dedicated breaker, heavier gauge wire, and a specific outlet type matched to the appliance, run directly from your panel. These circuits cannot share a breaker with anything else, and they are not something you can safely add with an extension cord or adapter plug.

Circuits We Install

We install dedicated 240V circuits for electric ranges and stoves (typically a NEMA 14-50 outlet), clothes dryers (NEMA 14-30), welders sized to the specific unit's amperage draw, home and backyard saunas, electric hot water tanks, air conditioning condensers, and workshop equipment. Every circuit is sized to the appliance's actual load using breaker and wire gauge selected per Canadian Electrical Code, not guessed at.

If you are adding an EV charger, see our dedicated EV charger installation page - it is its own category with its own requirements.

Why Proper Sizing Matters

Using the wrong breaker size or wire gauge on a 240V circuit is one of the more common and more dangerous shortcuts we see in older homes and DIY work. A breaker sized too large for the wire gauge will not trip before the wire overheats, which is a fire risk.

A breaker sized too small will trip constantly under normal appliance use. Every 240V appliance has a nameplate rating that tells us exactly what the circuit needs to handle, and we size the breaker and wire to match it, with headroom for the appliance's startup draw where needed.

Common Panel Capacity Questions

Adding a new 240V circuit means pulling additional load from your panel, and older 100A panels are sometimes already close to capacity once you add a stove, dryer, AC, and a new circuit like a sauna or welder. During your assessment, we check your panel's available capacity before recommending any new circuit.

If your panel cannot support the addition safely, we will tell you honestly and discuss whether a panel upgrade makes more sense than forcing a new circuit onto a maxed-out panel.

Installation Process

We start with a $49 on-site assessment or a free remote estimate if you can send photos of your panel and the appliance location. We confirm the appliance's electrical requirements, check panel capacity, and give you a written quote before any work starts.

Installation typically takes a few hours for a straightforward run from an accessible panel, longer if the wire needs to travel through finished walls or ceilings. Every 240V circuit installation includes an ESA inspection so you have documentation the work meets code.

Shaun and his team did an amazing job upgrading our electrical panel. Very professional, clean work, and explained everything clearly. Highly recommend Superior Power Electric!

Sized to Code, Not Guessed

Every breaker and wire gauge is selected using the appliance's actual nameplate rating and Canadian Electrical Code requirements, not a generic assumption.

Dedicated Circuits Only

Stoves, dryers, welders, saunas, and hot water tanks each get their own circuit run directly from the panel - never shared with another appliance or outlet.

ESA-Inspected Installation

Every 240V circuit installation includes an ESA inspection so you have documentation the work meets current Ontario code.

A mouse had chewed the wire to our dishwasher and we needed it fixed before we could install our new one. Great communication in setting up the appointment. Shaun was on time & identified the issue and the fix correctly.

Professional, courteous, tidy, on time and reasonably priced. He does what he says he will do. Shaun sets the bar where all contractors and businesses should strive to be. I was renovating my kitchen in my 1960s era house which was sorely lacking outlets for appliances.

We called Shaun again because we were so happy with his previous work and knew he was a great communicator and problem solver. Once again he was able to quickly identify the concern and even came on a snowy Sunday to fix our issue so we would have the work done before Christmas.
