What Is a Generator Installation, Really?
A generator installation means wiring a generator into your home safely and legally, not running an extension cord through a cracked window during a storm. There are two real paths.
A portable generator inlet with a CSA-approved interlock lets you plug a portable unit in through a locking outdoor inlet and safely feed your panel - a good fit for homeowners who want the fridge, furnace, and sump pump covered during a storm or two a year. A full automatic standby system is a permanently installed unit outside your home, hooked to your gas line, that starts itself within seconds of an outage whether you are home or away.
Both paths need an ESA electrical permit and a real transfer switch. Neither one is optional, and neither one is a job for backfeeding through a dryer outlet.
What a Generator Installation Costs in Brampton
A portable generator inlet with an interlock kit runs $800 to $2,000 - that covers the inlet box, wiring to the panel, the CSA interlock, and testing. A manual transfer switch with a dedicated sub-panel for essential circuits runs $1,500 to $3,500.
A full automatic standby system, electrical work only, runs $5,000 to $9,000, and a fully installed standby system including the unit, pad, transfer switch, and wiring runs $8,000 to $16,000 or more, with the gas line priced separately by a licensed gasfitter. The ESA permit and inspection is included in every project quote - it is mandatory on every generator hookup with no exceptions.
These are typical ranges from past Brampton and GTA projects, not a quote for your house. Panel condition, gas meter capacity, and where the unit can legally sit on your lot all move the number.

What Happens When You Call
First, you book the $49 on-site assessment. A licensed electrician looks at your panel, your gas meter capacity, and your lot to figure out setback clearances from windows, doors, and property lines.
You get a real number, not a guess over the phone. Second, you pick your path - portable inlet and interlock, or full automatic standby - and we size the transfer switch to the circuits you actually want to keep running, whether that is just the sump pump and furnace or the whole house.
Third, if you are going standby, we coordinate the gas line with a licensed gasfitter to line up with our install day - we coordinate that work, we do not perform it ourselves. Fourth, we install and test.
Inlet and interlock jobs are often done the same day. Full standby installs run about a day for the electrical and pad work, with the gasfitter's visit scheduled separately.
Either way, we start the generator and test the transfer before calling the job done. Finally, we pull the ESA permit and handle the inspection, and you receive your certificate of inspection for your insurance file and for whenever you sell the house.
The Biggest Myth: Backfeeding Through a Dryer Outlet
The most dangerous thing a homeowner can do with a generator is backfeed it through a dryer or range outlet. That outlet has no idea the grid is down.
Backfeeding sends your generator's power out through your house wiring, back through the meter, and onto the street lines - the same lines a hydro crew believes are dead. A lineworker touching what they think is a de-energized wire can be electrocuted.
It is illegal in Ontario for exactly that reason, and there is no version of doing it just this once that makes it safe. A CSA-approved interlock solves this properly.
It is a metal bracket inside your panel that makes it physically impossible to have the main breaker and the generator breaker on at the same time - no software, no trusting yourself to remember. That is why inspectors accept it as a legal alternative to a manual transfer switch, and it is why every quote from us includes the ESA permit without you having to ask.
Standby vs Portable - Which Fits Your Home
A portable generator is a machine you store in the garage and drag out when the power dies, typically producing 7,000 to 10,000 watts through an essential-circuits setup - enough for a fridge, sump pump, furnace blower, and some lights and outlets. A standby unit lives outside permanently, starts around 14kW and goes well past 20kW, and starts itself automatically, enough to run the whole house including air conditioning without you thinking about it, though portable and mid-size units usually cannot start a central AC compressor without a soft-start add-on.
Which one homeowners pick usually comes down to how bad their last outage was. People who lost a sump pump and flooded a basement tend to go standby.
People who just want the fridge and furnace covered for a storm or two a year tend to go portable with an inlet. Brampton and the wider GTA see two flavours of outage worth planning for - winter ice storms that take down lines for days, and summer heat waves that push the grid hard enough to trip rolling brownouts - so sizing your system for a multi-day event, not just a few hours, is the safer bet.
How to Hire the Right Electrician for This
Before you sign anything, ask what is excluded from the quote - some numbers include the pad, the gas line coordination, and the permit, and some do not, which is usually why quotes vary so much between electricians for the same generator. A contractor worth hiring brings up the backfeeding risk before you do and explains why it matters, includes the ESA permit and inspection in the written quote without being asked, asks what circuits matter to you before recommending a size, coordinates directly with a licensed gasfitter for standby installs, and shows you the ECRA/ESA licence number without being asked twice.
Walk away from anyone who suggests backfeeding to save money, will not mention a permit unless pressed, cannot explain what a CSA-approved interlock is, or quotes just the generator unit with no mention of the pad, transfer switch, or gas coordination. Superior Power Electric holds ESA/ECRA License #7014710, has 57 five-star Google reviews, and serves Brampton, Mississauga, Vaughan, and the broader GTA.
