What Whole-Home Surge Protection Actually Does
A whole-home surge protector is a Type 2 device that installs inside or beside your electrical panel and clamps voltage spikes before they reach your house wiring. It handles the spikes that happen constantly - the grid switching loads around, a transformer nearby doing its job, your own fridge compressor or AC unit kicking on and throwing a small spike back into the wiring.
None of it looks dramatic. It just wears down electronics a little at a time.
What it does not do is stop a direct lightning strike - nothing bolted to your house can absorb that much energy, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something extra. What it does handle is the secondary stuff, the voltage spike that travels through the grid after a strike hits a line nearby, which is the more common way lightning actually damages house electronics.
A power bar surge strip only protects whatever is plugged into it. A panel-mounted device covers your whole house at once, including hardwired appliances a power bar never touches - your furnace and heat pump control boards, garage door opener, and smart thermostat.
What Surge Protection Costs in the GTA
A standard Type 2 surge protective device on a panel with a free breaker slot runs $350 to $500 - the most common scenario. A higher-capacity SPD for homes with a heat pump or EV charger runs $500 to $700, since those electronics-heavy loads justify a beefier device.
Bundled with a panel upgrade while the panel is already open for other work, it runs $400 to $600. A tight or older panel that needs modification to make room runs $700 to $900.
Installation is usually a one to two hour job if there is room in the panel, longer if the panel is cramped or needs modification. Exact pricing depends on your panel's condition, available space, and the device chosen.

What Happens When You Call
First, a licensed electrician looks at your panel during the $49 assessment, confirms there is room or what it takes to make room, and gives you a firm price. Second, we match the device to your home's load, factoring in anything electronics-heavy like a heat pump, EV charger, or a house full of home office gear.
Third, on install day, power goes off briefly, the device connects to the panel, and everything is torqued and tested to Ontario Electrical Safety Code. Fourth, we confirm the status light is green, show you exactly where it is, and tell you what to check for after a big storm or grid event.
These devices are sacrificial by design - they absorb damage so your electronics do not, then eventually need replacing. If the light shows red or dark instead of green after a major event, it has done its job and needs swapping out.
The Biggest Myths Corrected
The myth that trips people up most is thinking a surge protector stops lightning strikes - it clamps voltage spikes from grid switching and nearby strikes traveling through the wires, but a direct hit on your house overwhelms any panel device rated for normal residential use. Another common one: my power bars already cover this.
They protect only what is plugged into them, while a panel device covers your whole electrical system. A third myth is that once it is installed, it is protected forever - SPDs are sacrificial, they absorb damage over time or in one large event, then need replacing, which is why checking the status light after storm season matters.
And some homeowners assume only old houses need this, when newer homes often have more electronics per square foot - heat pumps, EV chargers, smart everything - which makes surge protection just as relevant, sometimes more. It is also fair to ask whether this is just an upsell.
Newer editions of the Canadian Electrical Code increasingly expect a surge protective device on new panel installs, and the cost of one fried control board usually covers the device several times over.
How to Hire the Right Electrician for This
A contractor worth hiring explains clearly what the device does and does not protect against, shows you the status light and what green versus red means, gives you a written quote before touching the panel, is ESA/ECRA licensed and pulls proper documentation, and recommends layered protection - the panel device plus point-of-use strips on your TV and computer - instead of selling it as a total fix. Walk away from anyone who claims the device stops direct lightning strikes, will not show you the status light or explain what it means, installs it without checking whether your panel has proper room or grounding, skips a written quote, or pressures you into a same-day install with no explanation.
Superior Power Electric holds ESA/ECRA License #7014710 and has 57 five-star Google reviews from homeowners across Brampton and the GTA. Grid switching events happen more often than most homeowners realize, especially during storm season, and with more GTA homes now running a heat pump, an EV charger, and a household full of sensitive electronics, a panel with zero surge protection is carrying more risk today than it was ten years ago.
