What Is Aluminum Branch Wiring?
Between 1965 and 1976, copper prices spiked and many Ontario homes were built or renovated using aluminum branch wiring instead of copper. Aluminum conducts electricity fine, but it expands and contracts more than copper as it heats and cools, and it oxidizes at connection points.
Over decades, this causes wire connections at outlets, switches, and light fixtures to loosen, overheat, and in some cases arc. If your home was built in that window, there is a real chance some or all of your branch circuits are aluminum, even if the panel and larger feeder wires are copper.
Why Insurance Companies Flag It
Most Ontario insurance companies now ask directly about aluminum wiring on new policies and renewals. If your home has unaddressed aluminum branch wiring, insurers commonly refuse coverage, charge a higher premium, or require proof of remediation within a set window before they will bind or renew the policy.
A home inspector doing a pre-purchase inspection will almost always flag visible aluminum wiring, which can hold up a real estate closing until it is addressed. Getting ahead of this with a proper remediation and documentation from a licensed electrician resolves the issue with most insurers.
The Right Way to Fix Aluminum Wiring
Twisting aluminum and copper wires together with a standard wire nut, sometimes called pigtailing with the wrong connector, is not an approved fix and can make the problem worse. There are two methods that are actually accepted by Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority and most insurance companies.
The first is COPALUM crimping, which permanently joins the aluminum wire to a short copper pigtail using a specialized crimp tool - this is considered a permanent repair. The second is AlumiConn connectors, a screw-based connector designed specifically for aluminum-to-copper connections, which is more affordable but still fully approved.
For homes with extensive aluminum wiring or planned renovations, full replacement with copper is sometimes the more practical long-term option. We assess your home and recommend the approach that fits your budget and timeline.
How We Assess and Repair Aluminum Wiring
We start by identifying every outlet, switch, and fixture connection fed by aluminum wire, since aluminum wiring often only affects specific circuits rather than the whole house. During the $49 on-site assessment, we open a sample of outlets and switches, check the panel, and give you a written scope showing exactly how many connections need remediation.
From there we install COPALUM crimps or AlumiConn connectors at every affected point, test each connection, and provide documentation your insurance company can use to update your policy. Every job includes an ESA inspection where required.
Signs Your Home May Have Aluminum Wiring
Homes built or renovated between 1965 and 1976 are the most likely candidates, but the only way to know for certain is to open a panel and a few outlets. Warning signs include warm or discolored outlet and switch covers, a persistent burning smell near outlets with no obvious source, lights that flicker or dim without a clear cause, and outlets or switches that stop working intermittently.
If your insurance renewal letter specifically asks about aluminum wiring, or your home inspector flagged it during a purchase, that is a clear signal to get a licensed assessment before it becomes a bigger problem.
