What Is an EICR (and the Ontario Equivalent)?

EICR stands for Electrical Installation Condition Report - a formal inspection of a property's electrical system that documents whether it is safe to keep using. The term comes from the UK, and many Brampton homeowners, landlords, and newcomers search for it by name.

In Ontario, the equivalent is a General Electrical Inspection carried out by a licensed electrical contractor and certified through the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). Whichever name you use, the goal is the same: a qualified electrician examines your panel, wiring, outlets, grounding, and connections, then gives you a written report on the condition and any safety concerns.

Superior Power Electric provides this inspection across Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon, and the wider GTA, and every inspection is backed by our ESA/ECRA license (#7014710).

Who Needs an Electrical Safety Inspection?

There are five common reasons people in Brampton book an electrical safety inspection. Landlords need documented proof that a rental unit's wiring is safe for tenants - increasingly requested by insurers and municipalities.

Home sellers use a clean report to reassure buyers and avoid last-minute deal problems. Home buyers order a pre-purchase inspection so they know what they are walking into before they sign.

Insurance companies often require an inspection before they will write or renew a policy on an older home, especially those with knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring or a Federal Pioneer panel. And many homeowners simply want peace of mind on a property built before 1995.

If any of these sound like you, an inspection is worth booking.

What We Check During the Inspection

A Superior Power Electric inspection is hands-on, not a quick walk-through. We check the electrical panel for capacity, correct breakers, and signs of overheating or recalled equipment (such as Federal Pioneer / Stab-Lok).

We test a representative sample of outlets and switches for correct wiring, polarity, and GFCI/AFCI protection where required. We examine grounding and bonding, visible wiring runs, junction boxes, and connections for loose terminals or unsafe backstab joints.

We look for knob-and-tube and aluminum branch wiring, which carry specific safety and insurance implications. We assess the service entrance and meter base, and flag any work that does not meet the current Ontario Electrical Safety Code.

You receive a clear written report listing what passed, what needs attention, and what is urgent - in plain language, with photos.

How Pricing Works (No Surprises Policy)

Most inspections start with our $49 on-site assessment. A licensed electrician comes to the property, performs the inspection, and gives you a written report and an itemized quote for any recommended repairs.

The $49 is credited toward any work you choose to proceed with. There is no obligation to book repairs - the report is yours.

If the property is being sold, rented, or insured and you need ESA to issue an official Certificate of Inspection, we arrange that filing and explain the ESA fee separately and up front. We never bundle hidden charges into a single lump sum.

If repairs are needed, Financeit financing is available with approved credit so you can spread the cost.

Why Brampton Property Owners Choose Us

Superior Power Electric is led by Shaun Pennant, a licensed electrician with over 15 years in the trade, and backed by 57 five-star Google reviews from across the GTA. We are fully ESA/ECRA licensed (#7014710), which means our inspections and any certificates carry real weight with insurers, buyers, and municipalities.

We specialize in the older Brampton housing stock where inspections matter most - homes with aging panels, knob-and-tube, or aluminum wiring. You get an honest report, clear next steps, and no pressure to buy work you do not need.

EICR Inspection

Ontario's Answer to the EICR

An electrical safety assessment carried out by an ESA-licensed contractor (ESA/ECRA License #7014710) - the Ontario equivalent of a UK-style EICR: a documented condition check of your home's electrical system.

Written Report With Photos

You receive a clear written report listing what passed, what needs attention, and what is urgent, in plain language with photos, not electrician shorthand you need translated.

$49 Credited Toward Repairs

Every inspection starts with the $49 on-site assessment and a written report. If you choose to proceed with any recommended work, that $49 comes off the total.

ESA Involvement If Needed

An official ESA Certificate of Inspection applies to electrical work filed with ESA, not to a condition check on its own. If your sale, rental, or insurer needs ESA paperwork, we explain exactly what ESA can certify and handle any required filing for repair work we perform, with ESA fees quoted separately and up front.

How Much Does an Electrical Safety Inspection Cost in Brampton?

A mouse had chewed the wire to our dishwasher and we needed it fixed before we could install our new one. Great communication in setting up the appointment. Shaun was on time & identified the issue and the fix correctly.

Professional, courteous, tidy, on time and reasonably priced. He does what he says he will do. Shaun sets the bar where all contractors and businesses should strive to be. I was renovating my kitchen in my 1960s era house which was sorely lacking outlets for appliances.

We had an electrical issue with our circuits and they came in the next day. Shaun was very nice and helpful and above all very professional. He even provided recommendations on how to avoid similar problems moving forward.

We called Shaun again because we were so happy with his previous work and knew he was a great communicator and problem solver. Once again he was able to quickly identify the concern and even came on a snowy Sunday to fix our issue so we would have the work done before Christmas.
