What Ontario Code Requires

Ontario's Fire Code and Building Code require working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas, with an additional alarm inside each bedroom in newer homes. Carbon monoxide alarms are required near sleeping areas in any home with a fuel-burning appliance, such as a gas furnace, gas stove, or fireplace, or an attached garage.

Homes built or renovated more recently are required to have hardwired, interconnected alarms, meaning if one alarm detects smoke or CO, every alarm in the house sounds at once. Battery-only alarms are still common in older homes but no longer meet current code for new installations and major renovations.

We Are Seeing a Real Increase in These Calls

Over the past while, we have seen a noticeable jump in calls specifically about smoke and CO detectors - homeowners dealing with alarms that chirp constantly, units that are 10+ years old and past their reliable lifespan, insurance renewals asking about interconnected alarms, and new homeowners discovering their existing alarms are not hardwired or not properly placed. If any of that sounds familiar, you are not alone, and it is a quick, affordable fix compared to most electrical projects.

Hardwired vs Battery-Only Alarms

Battery-only alarms are better than nothing, but they fail silently more often than people expect - dead batteries, disconnected units, or alarms that simply reach the end of their service life without anyone noticing. Hardwired alarms run on your home's electrical system with a battery backup for power outages, so they stay active even if a battery dies.

Interconnection means every alarm in the home communicates, so if smoke is detected in the basement, the alarm outside your upstairs bedroom sounds too - critical for waking people up before smoke or CO reaches them. We install hardwired, interconnected smoke and CO alarms, and can convert a home from battery-only to hardwired as part of the same visit.

10-Year Lifespan and Replacement

Smoke and CO alarms have a 10-year service life, printed on the back of the unit with a manufacture date. After 10 years, the sensor inside degrades even if the alarm still appears to function, and manufacturers and fire departments recommend full replacement rather than just a battery swap.

If your home's alarms predate 2016 or you do not know their age, that is a strong signal it is time for new units. We replace old alarms with current, code-compliant hardwired combination or separate smoke and CO units matched to your home's layout.

Installation Process

We assess your home's layout - number of storeys, bedroom locations, and any fuel-burning appliances or attached garage - to determine exactly how many alarms you need and where Ontario code requires them. Installation involves running low-voltage interconnect wiring between units and tying into your electrical system, typically completed in a few hours for a standard home.

Every installation is tested unit by unit and as a full interconnected system before we leave, and larger jobs include an ESA inspection.

Shaun and his team did an amazing job upgrading our electrical panel. Very professional, clean work, and explained everything clearly. Highly recommend Superior Power Electric!

Professional, courteous, tidy, on time and reasonably priced. He does what he says he will do. Shaun sets the bar where all contractors and businesses should strive to be. I was renovating my kitchen in my 1960s era house which was sorely lacking outlets for appliances.

We called Shaun again because we were so happy with his previous work and knew he was a great communicator and problem solver. Once again he was able to quickly identify the concern and even came on a snowy Sunday to fix our issue so we would have the work done before Christmas.
